I know it's hard to believe that your senior year is finally coming to an end. You've been patiently awaiting the opportunity to walk across that stage, grab your diploma and toss that hat in the air. This should be a joyous time. It's a time where you get to reminisce with close friends and think back on all of the influences—good and bad—that you've had to endure throughout your race to the finish line—graduation. I encourage you to enjoy it with a passion. However, when the sun rises the next morning it will be decision time. A multitude of decisions will be laid before you. For many of you, your decision will guide/alter the next decade of your lives. This is your entry ticket into the crazy world called adulthood.
One of the biggest decisions you will have to make will revolve around the BIG C—College. For some of you the university life may not necessarily be in your realm of reality for a number of reasons. Below are some things to consider if your path to success doesn't necessarily include enrolling into a university out the gate.
I. Pick up a trade
If I could do it all over again, I would have seriously considered picking up a trade. This is a skill NO ONE can take from you. This is an opportunity for you to provide a service that will continuously provide an opportunity for you to earn some income. There are some cool trades to consider such as becoming a barber/beautician, electrician, HVAC contractor or specializing in carpentry.
II. Community College
Don't sleep on Community Colleges. Here is a list of some of the great pros community colleges can provide.
· Lower tuition
· Earn a 2 year degree in a particular field and obtaining a job in your respective field.
· Flexible schedule
· Smaller classes
III. Explore
Use this time to explore and find YOURSELF. If there is a career path or company you would like to explore, reach out and try to find a mentor. See what type of training or certifications you would need. There is a chance a degree may not be needed. I also would advise to use this time to explore your entrepreneurial efforts (I will have more on this topic in future posts). Basically, just take some time out for you to figure things out. Not too long though!!!
Have fun and make sound decisions future leaders of tomorrow. I believe in you!!!
